1) What are you most looking forward to next semester?
I am looking forward to taking my mythology and sociology classes that I am registered for. I have an interesting schedule with an array of classes from different ends of the cirricullum spectrum. It really seems like a lot but i think that I can handle it. I am on the home stretch now. Can't wait for Winter 2011!!!! Clinicals!!!!
2) What advice do you have for incoming Freshmen next Fall?
Keep your head up and don't let any time get away from studying. Stay as focused as possible for as long as possible because if you get to distracted, you fall very far behind and not be able to catch up. And if you can it'll be a miracle. Take as many notes as possible and refer to as often as possible. Never take your time for granted because it's all you have right now. Just keep telling yourself "I can do this!!!"And you can.. I believe in you!

Plans and ideas
1) What are you most stressed-out with at the moment? Why? Is your body re-acting to this stress? Devise a plan to deal with it. (Who do you turn to when you are stressed?)
There is a lot that stresses me out right now. I have a lot going on with my life, my children miss me terribly, school is really getting to me, work is getting harder to deal with because it takes away from my time with my children (but the plus side is I get lots of studying done). Let's see what topic do I want to hit?
My body really is reacting to the stress in a bad way. I wake up in the mornings (after getting very little sleep) and instantly feel sick. If I eat before I leave the house, I fall asleep on my way to class. So that is not an option. My class schedule is so messed up that I don't eat the way I should. Living off of gatorade, pop, and chips is not a very good idea.
My plan is to deal with the semester and catch up on my sleep when it's over. That's really all I can do. As for talking to someone, I really don't have anyone that I can. Every time I try, it either upsets the other person and htey stop talking to me or it makes our relationship very strained. So instead of talking I write my feelings down on my computer. Sometimes I print them out and send them to people, but a lot of times it's just my way of venting.
2) READ the following excerpts from last year's UN100 on how they approach studying and retention of information from textbooks. These are extremely successful and their grades are reflecting it. If you haven't cracked your Anatomy textbook especially, you are doing yourself a great disservice!
I really like what they had to say and I will try to use a few of those ideas in my studying.

There are two parts to this Blog:
1) Pick a classmate's Blog and read one of their entries. Leave one comment on it. (You'll see where you can click "Comment" at the end of it - you must be logged in as yourself to leave a comment). At the bottom of this, you will find a complete address list of everyone's sites.
2) Write Blog #4 on your own page, answering the following: What do you have in common (academically, personally, etc..) with the classmate whose Blog you chose? Did s/he offer any useful information you will most likely use in the future?
I chose to read Don's blog because we (like most of the class) are doing our careers towards something in medicine. I personally am in the surgical technology department, where Don is in the radiography department. But I really can relate to Don because we are both family oriented (I will do anything for my children and anyone else in my family) and are the typical non-traditional students. We also have a few of the same beliefs when it comes to school work and the classes we are required to take. For instance why do we need some of these classes and what is it truly going to do for us in the "field of our study"?
Don has helped me quite a bit in school, whether it is studying with me or helping me with other things. I consider him a really good friend and really hope that we can remain that way for a very long time.

Need Help!!!!!!!!
What do you feel this course (UN100) should focus on? What do you need help in, specifically?
I feel that this course should focus more on helping us study and putting less work on us. We were told that we need to focus on Anatomy and Chemistry, but it is getting really hard to do when other teachers pile on more and more stuff that hinders us from doing what we need to do. When I signed up for this class (and not because I wanted to), I was told it was a glorified study hall, teaching about note taking, study tips, and resume skills. Once in the class, I realized that it is a lot of work and not very many credits. Most 2 credit courses are only 6 weeks long and don't require as much work as this class does. The next time some one asks me if I mind being in a class, i am going to do more research and actually learn about the class before I say that I will take it. The only reason I'm in here is that I had to sign up for a specific block in order to get into my Anatomy and Chemistry classes.
As for what I need help with, everything. Anatomy and Chemistry are getting harder to understand, Surgical Technology class is going to be getting harder when we enter the new book, and my English class has me weighted down with even more books than all my other classes combined. Time management is not really an option right now because I juggle school four days a week, work three days a week, and I have two children at home. School can not consume my life, but it really seems like it is. I have not had much time with my children other than coming home and putting them right into bed. They don't see me enough as it is because they are in school also, but to only see me long enough to say "Good night Mom, I love you" is not quality time that my girls need. Weekends are out because of the shift that I work. Not real easy to spend time with them when I work all night and sleep during the day.
Please write at least one paragraph focusing on your specific academic needs. That's it - have a great week!
My specific academic needs are that i need more time to finish everything and not as much crap piled on at one time. If it's not two tests in one week, it's the fact that I have a crap load of reading for more than one class that is due at the same time, without a lot of time in between them. Trying to read 8 books and 5 essays (each at least 17 pages if not more) for two different classes (most of them assigned for one class) is not easy at all. Then try to write a paper about it and argue your point. It is not easy at all because I can't remember what I read for what class. Then the paper gets screwed up or you have to go and rewrite the whole thing because when you proof read it, it doesn't make sense. So i guess you could say academically, I need a lot of help in all areas.

“Only the educated are free.” –Epictetus
Ø Describe your ideal Instructor/Professor.
My ideal instructor/professor would be one that is fair and doesn't fly through material and explains everything in as much detail as possible. One who doen't go on to the next lesson until they are certain that we know it well enough.
Ø “I knew it when I studied it, but I forgot it on the test.” How can students study differently to prevent this from happening?
Don;t try to cram it all in and then over study. Or they can slowly "absorb" the information and review before a test.
Ø How do you study for quizzes/tests?
I study as much as I can after I take my notes and review the night before and any spare time before the test that I can.
Ø What do you have trouble with on quizzes/tests?
remembering way to much information from a lot of chapters
Also, read this short excerpt-- I was shocked:
For coffee drinkers, it would seem fairly safe to just grab a quick cup of coffee at McDonalds on the way to work. But many health conscious people would object to it also including this list of ingredients: sodium phosphate, sodium polyphosphate, Di-Acetyl Tartrate Ester of Monoglyceride, sodium stearoyl lactylate, tetra sodium pyrophosphate, sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium citrate, and carrageenan.

Some of these food additives are not foods at all, but are chemicals that are generally recognized as safe. Most of these additives cannot be found at your local grocery store, probably because they aren’t food. But some can be found at your local hardware store, though in inedible products like low tox antifreeze, silicone caulk, soap, sunscreen, and play sand.

Finally - Do you feel as if there is any healthy fast food available to consumers? If so, where and why? Give specific examples of products.. Please be honest and support your opinions. For example, I feel that Subway's Veggie Sub is healthy due to its freshly-cut produce, cheese, and "fresh-baked" breads. I actually talked to a friend who works at Subway and he said in MQT, they slice their own produce. (My fear was that it arrived pre-sliced and filled with
preservatives). It's not organic, but it's a start.
No there is no such thing as a healthy fast food place because there is so much grease involved with making just about everything in fast food, whether its the food itself or what its prepared in.

so confused
Ø List your own quote, favorite saying, song, or other expression of your feelings today.
My favorite saying if WTF????? I really don't have any favorite songs, just whatever i feel like listening to because of the mood I'm in. I am so confused right now. There is a lot going on in my life and I don't know how to control it. i have always been the one in control of everything, keeping my composure and knowing what to do and when to do it. My life is so haywire right now that I can't really function normally and it is really getting to me.
Ø List initial observations of your new environment.
I have noticed that my new classes are way harder than the ones that I had last semester and that I may not pass as easily as I did before.
Ø List initial observations of your classes.
My classes absolutely suck. Thank goodness I have made friends in them so I have people to lean on for support.
Ø What observations have you made about other students?
I have noticed that there are people struggling just as much as I am and then there are others that really don't care what happens to them.
Ø About your instructors?
Some instructors really seem to care while others do not.
Ø What do you think will be your biggest challenge(s) academically this semester?
my biggest challenges this semester will be anatomy and chemistry.
Ø Reiterate a term or concept you learned in Anatomy this week.
the skin has four or five layers depending on where you are looking. Only the palms and the soles of the feet have 5 and that makes them thick skin, while the other part are thin skin because they only contain 4 layers.
Ø List a few pleasant events that happened during your first weeks at NMU.
met new friends, didn't run into my ex-husbands, got good schedule down, and completed lots of work.
Ø List habits you already possess that make you successful in college.
can retain lots of information and learn in many different forms depending on the subject
Ø List habits (timewasters?) you can change or modify, or need to lose.
need a better schedule and less distractions
Ø Explain how you determine what to write down in notes during lectures.
i write down everything that i possibly can and then go through while studying and pick out what my mind says that he stressed or i mark it a certain way.
Ø Based on your first readings in the TCB text, describe the differences between Active Learning & Passive Learning (reading, note-taking, etc..)
active learning involves reading taking notes and discussion, while passive learners just listen and try to recal the facts
Ø Based on your first readings in the BT text, list TWO of favorite quotes and explain why they "speak" to you.
none really stood out at me, to be honest. i liked all of it
Ø Finally, name one goal (personal, academic, etc..) you have for yourself next week.
pass my chemistry test and my anatomy test
